“Morning sickness”, as nearly any pregnant woman will tell you, is a misleading term; while it is true that the morning is the most intense time for nausea symptoms, they can strike at any time during the day.Most women (3 of 4) will experience some kind of nausea, vomiting, or both, most often beginning around week 6 and lasting to about week 14 to 18; there are a few unfortunate women who do experience nausea and/or vomiting until the last day of their pregnancies.Just because morning sickness happens to most women, that doesn’t mean it’s not a stressful condition which should be dismissed out of hand.

The causes for nausea during pregnancy are not clearly understood, but is likely caused by a combination of hormonal, psychological, and physical factors that will vary from woman to woman.The most important of these is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, or the pregnancy hormone), whose rising levels tend to match rising feelings of nausea and vice versa; another important hormone is estrogen, which has been shown to increase sensitivity to aromas.

It is also believed by some researchers that women whose bodies normally react to stress with vomiting or “feeling sick” are more likely to experience morning sickness as a reaction to the stress of pregnancy.While not scientifically tested or confirmed, there are many techniques, none involving medication, that might bring you relief from your nausea; generations of women swear by their efficacy, and it is likely that one or more will work for you.

One step is to eat frequently over the course of the day so that your stomach is never completely empty; for the mornings, keep crackers by your bed to nibble on right when you wake up. Stay in bed for another half hour or so to let your stomach settle and then try to get up – you may find your nausea is relieved this way.Any pregnant woman should avoid just jumping out of bed, giving herself time to wake up and get up.

You can experiment with high-protein versus high-carbohydrate meals as a nausea depressant; you should, however, try to stay away from rich and spicy foods as a general rule.Do not force yourself to eat or be around foods that cause nausea, even if that means having a rather limited diet.You’ll obviously want to eat mostly bland foods, and to avoid anything really hot, since the strong smell will likely cause nausea; try to eat everything at room temperature or cold.

While you should have lots of beverages, try not to drink much at meals so you don’t get overfull; try drinking sports drinks, cold carbonated drinks, and anything with real ginger, like ginger ale or tea.

Keep in mind that nausea triggers can be unrelated to food – like motion sickness or heavy odors (such as perfume); you might also consider techniques like using an acupressure wristband or even hypnosis.Morning sickness is stressful and can make for a very unhappy pregnancy; for this reason, feel confident to ask your doctor about anti-emetic (anti-nausea) medications that might work for you if none of the natural remedies provide relief.
